Fliers Stricken by Fear Aided by Small Planes

People Afraid to Fly in Jetliners May Enjoy an Ultralight's Unique Benefits

Have you ever felt jittery about being a passenger on a jet airliner? Many people do. Estimates show that one in six adults has a fear of flying. Passengers often have trouble dealing with terrorism, cramped spaces, sensational coverage of crashes, stale air, and not knowing who's in control. Many times, fears are caused by a lack of understanding about what to expect during flight.

These findings are gleaned from feedback received on the popular website fearofflyinghelp.com, a free online course to help people overcome the fear of flying. According to the program's developer, Captain Stacey L. Chance, people are desperate to understand where this fear is coming from.

"I was astonished by the volume of feedback from travelers who described anxieties and fears related to flying." Captain Chance said. "I often receive emails from rational folks everywhere pleading for help to understand how and why this fear has gripped them. My website's message board is jammed with similar stories of distress."

"I was angry with myself for allowing terrorist[s] to make me afraid." Said an anonymous website visitor. "I also hate the claustrophobic, stuffy feeling I get riding in the cabin of a jet. I almost canceled the trip to see my family because of this fear of flying that seemed to have gotten worse after seeing those repeated images of planes smashing into buildings."

Some suffer professionally and personally as they put off vacations and business trips to avoid air travel. Those afflicted experience many of the same reactions including panic attacks and anxiety. Fearful fliers often report feeling everything from mild discomfort to extreme terror. Captain Chance, author of the Fear of Flying Help Course, flies for a major airline and has been flying and instructing in ultralights for over five years. He believes that many fearful fliers could actually benefit from a gentle jaunt in an ultralight.

"I think airline passengers today face many difficult issues such as security, claustrophobia, and the media's sensational stories of jetliner accidents. A number of people could be put at ease about flying if they got back to the basics; just show them the magical wonder of flying like a bird!"

Captain Chance recently completed a book titled Wings of Discovery. The story allows a glimpse into the life of a man who struggles to overcome the fear of flying. Along the way he makes mysterious new friends who help him build his own ultralight and teach him how to fly. Through some exciting and challenging adventures, the character faces his fears and learns about aviation and the importance of pursuing his passions.

"After reading Wings of Discovery I had an idea....there is a small airport in a town outside of Virginia Beach that has training in flying ultralights." Said a fearful flier from Virgina. "I'm going to look into this, I find myself intrigued by the thought of being able to be 'free.' This is great and just what I needed."

The book will appeal to those fascinated with flight, and those who have felt nagging jitters about riding on jetliners. Following the story, the book's Epilogue contains additional information about flying and airline travel.

New Book Helps People Discover Inner Strength, Lead Happier Lives

Unique Approach to Psychology Believed to be the Key

Hoping to develop techniques to help those suffering with emotional challenges, some psychologists are turning their attention to the study of people who are happy and well adjusted. A growing number of researchers are studying the idea of "positive psychology;" an approach that emphasizes the study of human strengths and resiliency instead of weaknesses and illness. The doctrine, developed by psychologist Martin E.P. Seligman, is founded on the belief that people are happiest when they participate in activities that build self esteem, promote optimism, and foster feelings of belonging and accomplishment. The core idea of positive psychology is to develop one's natural talents and strengths as a shield against weaknesses and negativity that can undermine happiness.

Captain Stacey L. Chance, author of the popular Fear of Flying Help Course has incorporated some of these same ideas in his online program and has been surprised and pleased by the results.

"I have always been afraid of the noises the plane makes and that at any given moment the plane was going to fall out of the sky." Wrote one fearful flier. "I know, it sounds silly, but since reading the information about how the plane is 'happiest' when it's flying and understanding how the plane actually gets off the ground and stays in the air has made a HUGE difference in my perceptions of flying. I am even excited to take my first flight since becoming educated about the facts and myths of flying. I can't tell you how thankful I am that I came across your site and think what you have done here is wonderful. Thank you so much for your insight!"

Captain Chance, a 20 year veteran with a major airline, developed the Fear of Flying Help Course to provide a free online resource for people suffering from a fear of flying. The highly successful program is founded on the premise that most fearful flyers can be helped through understanding, education, reassurance, and guidance.

Building on the success of his online course, Captain Chance recently completed a book titled Wings of Discovery. The story allows a glimpse into the life of a "regular guy" who recognizes the effects of stagnation in his life and seeks to overcome his growing anxieties by pursuing his passion even in the face of his own fears. Like the online help course, Wings of Discovery gives the reader a positive mindset and encourages change. The book delivers a powerful message of optimism and perseverance, two key elements to enjoying a happy, productive life, according to those studying positive psychology.

The book will appeal to those fascinated with flight, and those seeking an inspirational story of hope and accomplishment. To learn more about this work, or the fear of flying, please visit www.wingsofdiscovery.com and www.fearofflyinghelp.com.
